Innovating Carbon Capture Solutions: Pioneering a Cleaner Future

Coal continues to be a cornerstone of India's energy infrastructure and economic growth, supported by the nation’s vast domestic reserves. As India works towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future, the exploration and deployment of Carbon Capture Technologies, is crucial. In line with the five nectar elements (Panchamrit) of India’s climate action:

  1. Reach 500GW non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
  2. 50 per cent of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030.
  3. Reduction of total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes from 2022 to 2030.
  4. Reduction of the carbon intensity of the economy by 45% by 2030, over 2005 levels.
  5. Achieving the target of net zero emissions by 2070

To meet this target, carbon capture technology emerges as a game-changing solution. It enables the continued use of coal in thermal power generation while dramatically reducing its environmental impact. By capturing CO₂ emissions at the source, such as from power plants and industrial processes, and either storing or reusing them in various applications, CCUS supports a low-carbon energy transition without compromising energy security.

This is where the Hackathon on Carbon Capture Technology, organized by CMPDI on behalf of the Ministry of Coal, plays a vital role. It brings together innovators, researchers, startups, and industry leaders to develop actionable solutions that can help integrate carbon capture, utilization and storage systems into India’s energy sectors. By fostering innovation and collaboration, the event aligns with national priorities in climate action, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.

India’s strategy also includes enhancing carbon sequestration capabilities, aiming to create an additional carbon sink of 2-3 billion tons, alongside reducing fossil fuel dependency by 45% by 2030. These efforts form part of a broader vision to diversify the energy mix, boost domestic capacity in clean technologies, and ensure a resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem.

The adoption of carbon capture technologies also supports the goals of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan (Self-Reliant India Campaign) by reducing import dependency and promoting indigenous innovation. It offers a dual advantage: ensuring energy security while supporting environmental sustainability. As India accelerates its transition to cleaner energy, carbon capture stands at the intersection of industrial innovation and climate responsibility, providing a pathway to responsibly utilize its natural resources while safeguarding the planet.
